A Timeline for Roof Replacement

Every 15 to 30 years, a homeowner needs to replace their roof. Sometimes, due to storm or wind damage, the need for a roof replacement happens sooner than that. When your home needs a new roof, you probably wonder how long the job will take. Typically, it takes one to two days, but it can take up to two weeks.

Average Timeline for a Roof Replacement

If you own an average-sized home of about 2,500 square feet, expect removing your current roof and replacing it with your new roof to require about two days, barring weather delays. A few things influence the amount of time it takes to replace a roof. These include:

  • Home size
  • Unique home features
  • Damage to the roof underlayment or sub-roof
  • Roofing materials chosen

An asphalt shingle roof typically provides the quickest replacement option, but damage to one or more of the underlying layers of roofing can add to the time it takes.

Unusual Situations Add Replacement Time

In some cases, it can take up to two weeks to replace a roof. When this happens, the situation typically includes a larger home and significant storm or wind damage. In these situations, damage to the roof deck and/or trusses can require more complex repairs before we can replace the shingles or metal roofing.

A Timeline of Repairs

About 10 days typically pass from the moment of your decision to replace your roof to the moment you glance up to view your new roof. Making the plan for the project and finding a contractor can take anywhere from one day to two weeks. Once you’ve hired a contractor, though, the rest of the project should fly by. In Wichita, KS, Elite Roofing & Remodeling, LLC remains ready to replace your roof.

You’ll need to prepare your home for construction, which requires one to two days. Your contractor provides instructions for this process.

Typically, removing the existing roof takes one to two days. This estimate refers to the tear-off of asphalt shingles, the type of roof that more than three-quarters of U.S. homes feature.

The roof deck inspection and any necessary repairs can take about one day. The roof deck provides the stable surface on which we attach the roof shingles or tiles. Think of it as you would the plywood sub-floor your home probably has beneath its tile or carpet.

Once inspected and repaired, prepping the roof deck for the new roofing material only takes between one and three hours. Expect it to take about one to two days to install the new roof. Finally, the roofer conducts a final inspection of your new roof, which can occur on the day following the installation.
